World: Press Statement of the 829th meeting of the AU PSC on the draft resolution on silencing the guns in Africa

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 829th meeting held on 26 February 2019, on the draft resolution on silencing the guns in Africa, to be considered by the United Nations Security Council.

Council recalled the Assembly decision Assembly/AU/Dec.630 (XXVIII), adopted during the 28th ordinary session of the Assembly of the Union, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 30 – 31 January 2017, which endorsed the AU Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa by the year 2020 (AUMR), and decision Assembly/AU/Dec.645(XXIX) on the Inaugural Report of the PSC on the Implementation of the AUMR, adopted during its 29th Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa, on 3 – 4 July 2017, in which the Assembly called on all Member States to redouble efforts in further strengthening their governance institutions as part of the continental mobilization to ensure guns are silenced in Africa.

Council commended the efforts deployed by the African Members of the UN Security Council (A3) under the coordination of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, President of the UN Security Council for the month of February 2019 for spearheading the initiatives for the holding of the open meeting of the UN Security Council to consider the draft resolution on silencing the guns in Africa.

Council welcomed the draft UN Security Council resolution on silencing the guns in Africa and expressed its full support for its adoption and emphasized that this draft resolution will go a long way in enhancing the efforts of the continent and its determination towards silencing the guns in Africa within the AU Agenda 2063.

Council appeals to all African countries and all Members of the UN Security Council to extend their unwavering support toward the consideration and adoption of the draft resolution tabled by the A3, which represent the African common position in its commitment to strengthen the global peace and security architecture and building a conflict-free Africa.

Council agreed to remain actively seized of the matter.
