Addis Ababa, 23 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat extends his sincere condolences to the affected families, people and Government of the Republic of Guinea and the Republic of the Democratic Republic of Congo following landslides due to heavy rains.
At least eight people were killed in the district of Ratoma on the outskirts of the Guinean capital Conakry while at least 200 people lost their lives in Ituri Province in Northeastern DRC.
“This tragic loss of life and destruction of property in Guinea and DRC comes only eight days after a mudslide and flooding hit Sierra Leone, killed 500 people and displacing thousands more,” said the AUC Chairperson.
The AUC Chairperson further pointed out the AUC’s commitment to multi-hazard preparedness capacities within and across African countries as ratified under the International Health Regulations (2005) and as articulated in the African Region Health Security and Emergencies Strategy signed by African Health ministers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in August 2016”
The Chairperson reaffirms the AUC’s unwavering support of and solidarity with the people and Government of Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
